MaterialX Needs a Single-File Container
MaterialX assets are multiple loose files, which breaks down in online, and collaborative contexts. The community has already solved this with zip packaging. We just need to formalize it as .mtlz.

A 3D asset can preserve every proprietary feature and still look different in another tool. That tradeoff is why Land of Assets chose glTF over USD for its Master Assets.
A dozen unique material graphs can mean a dozen shader compilations before your model is ready. That flexibility has a visible loading cost—and helps explain why glTF uses a flat PBR material model.
PBR materials needed a way to travel between tools. Instead of inventing another format, I proposed adding a handful of parameters to Wavefront MTL—a small extension later adopted by TinyObjLoader and Blender.
